Surviving School Holidays When Your House Is On The Market

If your home is on the market, Easter school holidays can feel a little… chaotic.

Selling your home is stressful enough, but add school holidays into the mix and keeping your house “inspection-ready” can feel nearly impossible.

Kids are home full-time, toys are everywhere and somehow the clean floors can be covered in Lego, books, easter egg wrappers and snack crumbs by lunch!

Don’t worry—there are ways to manage the chaos without losing your mind these school holidays.

Have a clean house without putting playtime on pause.

Here are our top tips for keeping your home clean and presentable for inspections, even during the busiest school holidays.

Set up activity stations:

  • Use a tablecloth for craft projects. This is easy to scoop up and throw in the boot of the car to hide.
  • Have a tray for snack time to isolate mess and/or crumbs.
  • Assign a “toy zone” in one room.
  • Keep the kids favourite toys & books in baskets that can easily be put away.

This way you can quickly remove clutter before buyers walk through.

Encourage Mini Cleanup Routines:

Make cleaning part of the daily schedule:

  • 10-minute toy pick-up before lunch.
  • 5-minute tidy-up before screen time or their next Easter Egg.

Even little hands can help and it keeps the mess from piling up.

What to do when you have an Open for Inspection?

When you’ve got open for inspections booked, sometimes the easiest solution isn’t more cleaning… it’s simply getting everyone out of the house.

  • Pack a “go bag” the night before (snacks, hats etc).
  • Plan to leave 15 minutes early (kids always move slower when you’re in a rush).
  • Make it feel like a treat not an inconvenience.

Here are some suggestions to help you navigate these open for inspections that accommodate all budgets.

Visit a local park:

Look for local parks in your area. Playgrounds provide free entertainment and loads of fun for the kids.

Check out your local Shopping Centre website:

Many offer free school holiday activities which the kids will love.

Plan an outdoor Scavenger Hunt:

This can be as simple as purchasing small items such as plastic ladybugs, gemstones, dinosaurs, or insect figurines, and discreetly placing them around your local park for children to discover. These affordable items are readily available from retailers such as The Reject Shop, Kmart, or similar discount stores. Incorporate these treasures into an easy art activity (keep reading).

Think colouring books instead of paints, building toys that stay contained, or sensory play in sealed containers.

You can even set up simple, contained craft like decorating magic wands—wooden star wands (available from places like Spotlight, art stores or online) paired with gemstones or little treasures like ladybugs from an outdoor scavenger hunt that you may have done on one of your outings to  keep creativity flowing without the messy chaos.

Balancing school holidays with a home on the market may feel like a challenge, but with a little planning it’s absolutely possible to keep both your home and your children happy. By embracing simple, low-mess activities and making the most of time out of the house, you can maintain a beautifully presented space without missing out on the fun.
