Christmas and New Year Roadworks in Melbourne – Plan Ahead

A number of road disruptions and closures will be in place over summer across Melbourne, as we make progress on our big-scale infrastructure projects . Works will continue the West Gate Tunnel and the Metro Tunnel, as well as Major Road Projects work in the west and north, and maintenance on the West Gate Bridge.

Plan ahead and allow extra travel time for significant delays to keep your Christmas and summer holiday travelling as stress-free as possible.

Road Disruptions Over Christmas and the New Year

Flinders Street, Melbourne

02/09/2019 – ongoing

Eastbound road closure between Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street. Plan ahead as delays are likely. Drivers from Port Melbourne or South Melbourne, or those coming off the West Gate Freeway should consider using either City Road, Alexandra Avenue and Batman Avenue to access the eastern end of the CBD, or taking St Kilda Road. Those coming from the inner-west or north-west should plan to use another option to cross the CBD, including Collins, Lonsdale or La Trobe streets, or detour around the north of the city using Victoria Street.

West Gate Bridge

Inbound lane closures – 3 inbound lanes closed during the day (between 5am – 9pm) and 4 inbound lanes closed at night (between 9pm – 5am). All 5 outbound lanes open. Please allow up to 60 mins extra travel time or consider using alternative routes by following detours: Trucks travelling from west to east over the bridge detour to Footscray Rd / Wurundjeri Way via Geelong Rd. Trucks travelling from west over the bridge to CityLink detour to Dynon Rd via Geelong Rd. Cars travelling from west to east over the bridge detour to Footscray Rd / Wurundjeri Way via Williamstown Rd / Francis St / Whitehall St. Cars travelling from West over the bridge to CityLink detour to Dynon Rd via Willimastown Rd / Francis St / Whitehall St.

Monash Freeway, between Pakenham and city

Heavier traffic expected between Bairnsdale and Melbourne due to disruption on the Bainsdale line. Plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider using alternative routes.

Alexandra Parade, Fitzroy

02/01/2020 – 06/01/2020

Alexandra Parade closed to all traffic at Nicholson Street. Allow up to 60 minutes of extra travel time as there will be significant delays. Alternative routes: If you’re coming from the north take Bell Street instead. To access the city and Melbourne’s south east head onto the Tullamarine Fwy Citylink. If you can, take the Monash Freeway rather than Eastern Fwy to access the city from the East. If you can avoid the following roads: Alexandra Parade, Nicholson Street, Smith Street, Brunswick Street, Glenlyon Road, Lygon Street, Rathdowne Street, Victoria Parade, Hoddle Street, Eastern Freeway.

Nicholson Street, Fitzroy North/Brunswick East

Nicholson Street closed in both directions between Barkly Street and Johnston Street. Allow up to 60 minutes of extra travel time as there will be significant delays. Northbound road closure between South Gippsland Highway and Ormond Road. Overnight road closures between South Gippsland Highway and Ormond Road from Sunday 12 January to Saturday 25 January. Detour via Lynbrook Blvd or Pound Road. Large and oversize vehicles need to detour via Pound Road.

Plenty Road and MacDonalds Road, South Morang

No right turns at the intersection and no access between McDonalds Rd and Gorge Rd. Allow up to 20 minutes extra travel time and consider using alternative routes.

Dohertys Road, Truganina

Toorak Road level crossing at Monash Freeway
